Chicago Electrical Safety Liability

Chicago Electrical Safety Liability

We all know that electrical safety has to be given prime importance these days because many people are killed daily due to electrocution. Statistics reveal that about 25% of fire accidents occur due to carelessness or improper handling of electrical equipments. The fifth leading cause of death is electrical accidents. Most of the fire accidents that occur in houses are due to cooking appliances, which accounts for 56% (source – NIOSH, USA).

In 1871, a major fire accident took place in a 134 year old Chicago cathedral due to some electrical problem. This accident caused severe damage to the building.

So in order to reduce such electrical accidents, the Electrical Association of Chicago has imposed some safety measures that are to be undertaken while dealing with electrical appliances.

• Stay 10ft away from power lines, since contact with power lines causes severe burns or electrocution.

• Do not trim or climb trees near power lines.

• Switch off or unplug any appliances not in use, such as mobile charges, portable heaters etc.

• Look out for standard and high quality appliances having the CE mark, BEAB mark or BRITISH STANDARD mark.

• If there is any fallen power line immediately call the ComEd at 1-800-Edison-1 & report the location.

• You are required to call 811, to locate gas, electric and telephone lines before you dig.

The electric safety products that ensure protection from electrical faults in Chicago industries are the Residual Current – Operated Circuit Breakers (RCCBs), Arc Fault Current Interrupters (AFCIs), Glowing Connection Detectors (GCDs), Automatic Defibrillators, Automatic Fire detection and extinguishing system.

Thus practicing electrical safety is therefore not only vital for saving your life but also your property. But it is not possible to eradicate completely the electrical accidents. The probability of avoiding such accidents lies in our hands.

So,

“STAY AWAY TO STAY ALIVE!”
